Ensuring Your Curriculum is Broad and Balanced

As you continue to consider your curriculum for the year ahead, does that dreaded question keep haunting you … ‘How am I going to fit it all in?’

Planning ahead is key and so is ensuring that you maximise on all of the cross-curricular teaching and learning opportunities that arise.

Such opportunities may come from planning for the class or year group but remember to think about whole school experiences too i.e. visiting speakers, workshops, assemblies, sporting activities etc.

It is also crucial to ensure that you are considering the context of your school and the needs of your pupils carefully.  The National Curriculum is statutory (and MUST be present during all planning sessions) but it also allows for creativity and some level of interpretation.

Start by knowing the curriculum expectations for your year group. What should the children know to this point?  How will you assess pupils to ensure that you are confident of what their individual starting points are?  How will you move children on from that point?

The curriculum must be engaging for learners and ensuring that it is broad and balanced with a range of exciting, cross-curricular opportunities is essential.

Through our blogs, we will endeavour to answer some of the questions raised here to support you with whole school and class planning to ensure that you are creating a curriculum that is right for your children in your school.  Keep a look out for our updates.
